AcquamArIna: Innovation and Sustainability in Maritime Wastewater Management

We are pleased to announce that the AcquamArIna project – Intelligent wastewater management in maritime infrastructures using AI – has been approved by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region as part of the Proof of Concept (PoC) call, funded by the PR FESR 2021-2027 program.

A Revolution in Wastewater Management in Ports and Marinas

AcquamArIna was born out of the need to find innovative solutions for the sustainable management of water resources in maritime environments. The initiative aims to develop a platform based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) to optimize wastewater treatment and recycling processes in ports, marinas, and shipyards.

By integrating smart sensors and real-time data analysis, the system will allow monitoring of key parameters such as:

  • Water quality
  • Presence of chemical and physical contaminants
  • Discharge volumes

Machine Learning algorithms will process this data to identify inefficiencies, anomalies, and opportunities for improvement, enabling operators to optimize treatment cycles and reduce water consumption.

Project Objectives

AcquamArIna aims to:

  • Enhance environmental sustainability by reducing the discharge of untreated wastewater and transforming contaminants, such as metals, into reusable resources.
  • Introduce technological innovation through AI and IoT for more efficient, real-time, and low-impact environmental management.
  • Digitize the maritime ecosystem, offering advanced monitoring and decision-support tools for port managers.
  • Make infrastructures more competitive by lowering operational costs and facilitating compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Create a positive social impact by improving marine water quality and raising awareness about responsible water resource management.

A Cutting-Edge Project for the Future of the Circular Economy

In addition to reducing marine pollution, AcquamArIna stands out for its circular economy approach: the system goes beyond water purification and focuses on recovering valuable materials, such as heavy metals, transforming them into reusable resources.

Next Steps and Implementation

The project will span 12 months, starting with an initial phase of testing and development, followed by real-world trials to validate the system’s effectiveness. The ultimate goal is to develop a scalable technology that can be adopted across various maritime infrastructures at both national and international levels.

AcquamArIna represents the future of smart wastewater management in ports and marinas!

Stay tuned for updates on this groundbreaking innovation that will revolutionize water resource management in the maritime sector!
